A passenger, reportedly late for a flight, illegally entered the Madeira airport runway in the early hours of Tuesday, June 2, reports RTP Madeira. The 60-year-old foreign national climbed over the airport perimeter fence in an attempt to reach his plane. He was immediately detected by the airport's security system around 5:20 AM and taken to a Public Security Police station. The man was released after demonstrating he had no intention of committing a civil attack, justifying his actions by claiming it was the fastest way to catch his flight.

The Madeira Judicial Police arrested a 29-year-old man for attacking an 80-year-old woman. The detainee has been remanded in custody at a psychiatric prison unit.

The man is part of an international criminal organisation dedicated to “committing crimes against property, namely fraud and extortion, carried out predominantly through digital means.”

Three planes departed between the early hours and the start of the morning, and 20 departures were cancelled.

The low-pressure system Therese has caused landslides, flooding, and fallen trees since Thursday. A school in Porto Santo, one of the most affected areas, is closed until Wednesday for repairs.
