Portuguese government confirms first fatality in Venezuela earthquake

📍 Madeira⚖️ Legal📜 History#portuguese-diaspora

The Portuguese government has confirmed the first fatality of a Portuguese national following two major earthquakes that struck Venezuela this week. Regional authorities in Madeira also reported that two other victims of Portuguese descent have died, while the Portuguese Red Cross (Cruz Vermelha Portuguesa) is currently collecting donations to support emergency relief efforts in the affected region.

Update: Death toll rises to 235 following Venezuela earthquakes

The official death toll from the 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude earthquakes has risen to 235, with at least 4,300 people injured. Portugal is preparing to deploy an operational force of 60 civil protection and emergency personnel to assist with relief efforts in the coming hours.

The Portuguese Red Cross (Cruz Vermelha Portuguesa) is the national Red Cross society, founded in 1865, that provides emergency medical aid, shelters, blood donation drives and social services across the country. It works with Civil Protection in floods and storms to assist displaced people and coordinate volunteer relief. Those needing help or wanting to donate or volunteer can contact local branches or its national website.

📍 Madeira🏠 Property💶 Finance#property-market+2 more

The total value of housing sales in Madeira fell to €968.8 million in 2025, a 5.6% decrease from the previous year. Data from the Regional Directorate of Statistics (Direção Regional de Estatística) shows a particularly sharp 30.9% decline in the sale of new homes. Storm Therese brings heavy rain and wind across Portugal

📍 Madeira🏖️ Daily Life🌱 Environment#severe-weather+1 more

The Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera or IPMA) has warned that Storm Therese (Depressão Therese) will affect the mainland and Madeira through Saturday. Residents should expect intense rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds, with snow possible at high altitudes in Madeira. Sea conditions will also worsen, particularly along the southern coast and in mountainous regions. Residents should check local weather updates before traveling.

What is IPMA?

IPMA (Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera) is Portugal's national authority for weather, ocean, and climate monitoring. It produces weather forecasts, issues severe weather warnings, monitors seismic activity, and provides marine and atmospheric data.

IPMA uses a four-level color-coded warning system: green (no risk), yellow (potential risk), orange (moderate-to-high risk), and red (extreme risk). These warnings cover conditions such as heavy rain, strong winds, extreme heat, cold snaps, rough seas, and snow.

Residents should monitor IPMA forecasts during storm season (typically October–March) and heatwaves (July–August). IPMA bulletins are used by civil protection authorities, transport operators, and local councils to make decisions about road closures, school suspensions, and evacuation orders.

Madeira banana producers request price increase of up to 50 cents per kilo

📍 Madeira💶 Finance🏛️ Government#agriculture+1 more

Producers are demanding a higher price for Madeira bananas, arguing current rates are too low. The regional government maintains that the public company managing the sector is paying more and on time. The Madeira Banana Regional Exhibition took place this weekend in Madalena do Mar, where representatives from the government and political parties debated the issue. Producers argue that EU subsidies should not be counted as part of the government's payment, while the regional secretary for agriculture highlighted that the public company, Gesba, has ensured stability and increased average payments to farmers. Opposition parties, including the JPP and PS, have criticised the current remuneration policy, claiming it has not kept pace with production costs over the last two decades.
