Forecasts indicate waves reaching up to five metres north of the island and four and a half metres to the south. Authorities warn of precautions to be taken in coastal areas and at sea.

Madeira is expected to see waves of up to 5 metres on the north coast and 4.5 metres on the south coast. Authorities ask people to avoid coastal walks and recreational fishing, and to keep boats under observation.

The harbourmaster warns that waves on the north coast could reach up to four metres.

The warning was originally in effect until 06:00 this Tuesday and has been extended until 18:00.

The maritime tourism sector contributed €62.9 million to the regional economy last year, Madeira's regional government said, which also highlighted an increase in ships staying overnight.

The mayor explained the aim is to adjust and update the document that sets a payment of two euros per night, for a maximum of seven nights, with an exemption for children up to 12 years old.

The Port of Funchal is expected to receive the largest number of cruise ship calls in its history in 2025.
