The mayor, one of three that Chega won in the last local elections, had already stripped the party's councillors of their portfolios in March because they voted against the opening of caves.
José Carlos Gonçalves has been running the council alone for two months, since he dismissed two councillors. They had been elected, like him, on the Chega party list. Now they have resigned from their mandates, and a replacement is the president's niece.
Helena Freitas and Fábio Costa formalised their departure from the only municipality led by Chega in Madeira. The crisis began with a vote against the reopening of the municipality's caves.
The search began on Saturday, but only yielded results on Sunday morning.
The party has seen the departure of at least eight of its 137 elected councillors.
“We want stability, we are on the side of the population, we are not thirsty for elections to happen,” says the PSD councillor, warning that “it is not the PSD's responsibility to prop up the mayor.”
