The president of the Association of Madeira Banana Producer Organizations, Antonino de Abreu, argued that there should be an increase of 40 to 50 cents for each quality of banana.

Producers are demanding a higher price for Madeira bananas, arguing current rates are too low. The regional government maintains that the public company managing the sector is paying more and on time. The Madeira Banana Regional Exhibition took place this weekend in Madalena do Mar, where representatives from the government and political parties debated the issue. Producers argue that EU subsidies should not be counted as part of the government's payment, while the regional secretary for agriculture highlighted that the public company, Gesba, has ensured stability and increased average payments to farmers. Opposition parties, including the JPP and PS, have criticised the current remuneration policy, claiming it has not kept pace with production costs over the last two decades.

Miguel Albuquerque announced the figures at a ceremony for the handover of 30 housing units in Ponta do Sol. More than 2,000 families applied for the programme, but only about 550 were approved.
