  • 2001: Death of Marshal Francisco da Costa Gomes in Lisbon, aged 87. Career soldier, Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces and President of the Portuguese Republic from 1974 to 1976, he was — alongside António de Spínola — the senior military figure of the Carnation Revolution and the man who guided Portugal through the most turbulent phase of decolonisation and the transition to democracy.

  • 1556: Death of Saint Ignatius of Loyola in Rome. The former Basque soldier turned mystic, founder of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), shaped the Catholic Counter-Reformation, the missions to Asia and the Americas — including Portuguese-led ones — and the modern history of education.
