Man shot by police after threatening people in supermarket car park
A man allegedly threatening people in a supermarket car park in Machico, Madeira, was shot by a PSP officer on Thursday, June 11. The incident was reported to the Public Prosecutor's Office and the Judiciary Police, who have taken over the investigation. According to a statement from the PSP's Madeira Regional Command, officers were called to the scene at 9:15 pm after reports that the man had threatened a citizen with a bladed weapon. The statement notes that upon being located, the individual was in possession of a knife and adopted an aggressive attitude towards officers. Despite repeated police warnings to drop the weapon, the suspect did not comply and advanced towards one of the officers, creating an imminent danger to their physical safety. The PSP stated that it was necessary to use a firearm to stop the aggression, confirming that the individual was struck, disarmed, and immediately assisted by emergency services. He was subsequently transported to Dr. Nélio Mendonça Hospital in Funchal, where he remains under medical observation. The PSP confirmed it is fully cooperating with the judicial authorities.
