Serra da Estrela has been recognised as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, joining the World Network of Biosphere Reserves, as announced by the Institute for Nature Conservation and Forests (ICNF). The approval was confirmed during the 38th session of the International Coordinating Council of the Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme in Paraguay, bringing Portugal's total number of UNESCO-recognised Biosphere Reserves to 14.
