A bank branch in Santa Maria de Lamas, in the municipality of Santa Maria da Feira, was evacuated this Wednesday, March 11, due to a bomb threat, which also resulted in road closures, according to a local source and the financial institution involved. The incident occurred around 12:30 at a Millennium BCP branch, which confirmed the event, stated it is cooperating with authorities, and deferred further details. The bank activated security protocols, leading the GNR—whose local barracks are less than a kilometre away—to evacuate the bank building, a barbershop, and adjacent shops, while also closing surrounding streets to vehicle and pedestrian traffic. A customer from the evacuated barbershop told Lusa, 'The GNR told us that a man wearing a beanie and glasses entered the bank, left a bag there, said it contained explosives, and left empty-handed.' When contacted, the Lamas GNR did not answer, and the Aveiro GNR command only confirmed that several officers were deployed to the scene but provided no further information.
The man has an extensive criminal record for crimes against property, honour, public authority, and illegal possession of a weapon.
