Fuel prices news in Portugal

Parliament voted unanimously to extend the discount on the tax on petroleum and energy products (Imposto sobre Produtos Petrolíferos or ISP) through December 31. The temporary relief mechanism offsets value-added tax revenues when retail fuel prices rise more than ten cents above the March 2022 baseline. The measure applies retroactively from June 30 after lawmakers rejected wider tax-cut proposals from opposition parties.

Fuel prices in Portugal have reached record highs, with diesel and gasoline costs rising significantly since the escalation of conflict in the Middle East. Analysts warn that the situation is straining household budgets, while the Communist Party (Partido Comunista Português or PCP) continues to call for price caps and taxes on large corporate profits.

The Chega party, led by André Ventura, has submitted legislative proposals to Parliament aimed at lowering the cost of living. These include a temporary reduction of VAT on road fuels from 23% to 13%, a 0% VAT rate on essential food items, and the removal of tolls on the 25 de Abril and Vasco da Gama bridges.

Diesel is also reaching high prices. On Monday, the price stood at 2.104 euros per litre, the highest value since 8 April of this year, when it reached 2.145 euros.

Rising fuel prices have triggered protests across Portugal, including a go-slow march toward the Galp refinery in Sines and a car horn protest on the 25 de Abril bridge. Diesel prices have reached historic highs, leading to significant traffic disruptions on the IC33 road. The government faces mounting pressure as opposition parties and agricultural groups criticize the impact of these costs on the economy.

Update: Government denies profiting from fuel price hikes

Minister of Environment and Energy Maria da Graça Carvalho rejected accusations that the government is profiting from rising fuel costs, noting that VAT revenues are being used to offset tax burdens. The government also announced it will strengthen the sanctioning powers of the Energy Services Regulatory Authority (Entidade Reguladora dos Serviços Energéticos or ERSE) and extend support for gas cylinder purchases through the end of the year.

Drivers in Portugal are facing sharp fuel price hikes starting Monday, with diesel expected to rise by up to 12 cents and petrol by 9.5 cents per litre. Despite government adjustments to the tax discount on petroleum products (Imposto sobre os Produtos Petrolíferos or ISP), prices are reaching record highs.

Update: Historic fuel price increase expected

Forecasts for the week of September 7 to 13 indicate even higher increases, with some reports suggesting diesel could rise by 15 cents and petrol by 12 cents per litre. If these projections hold, average prices may reach approximately 2.17 euros per litre for diesel and 2.14 euros for petrol, leading many drivers to seek cheaper fuel in neighboring Spain.

The government has updated the Tax on Petroleum and Energy Products (Imposto sobre os Produtos Petrolíferos e Energéticos or ISP) to help families and businesses cope with rising fuel prices. Effective August 17, the new rates are set at 80.52 euros per 1,000 liters of diesel and 49.61 euros per 1,000 liters of gasoline.

The government is increasing the temporary discount on the Tax on Petroleum and Energy Products (Imposto sobre os Produtos Petrolíferos or ISP) starting next week. The relief will rise by 0.11 cents per litre for diesel and 0.43 cents for petrol to mitigate expected price increases. This measure, published in the Diário da República, aims to offset inflationary pressure on fuel costs.

Fuel prices are forecast to increase during the week of August 17, according to the Automobile Club of Portugal (Automóvel Club de Portugal or ACP). Diesel is expected to rise by 10 cents and gasoline by 9 cents per litre, though these figures remain subject to change based on global market conditions.

The government has announced an increase in the temporary tax discount on the Petroleum Products Tax (Imposto sobre os Produtos Petrolíferos or ISP) for diesel and petrol. Starting next week, the discount will rise by 2.1 cents per litre for diesel and 1.4 cents for petrol to mitigate expected market price increases. The measure was confirmed via an ordinance published in the official gazette, Diário da República.

Fuel prices are forecast to fall starting Monday, August 10, with diesel and petrol expected to drop below the 2-euro-per-litre mark. The Automobile Club of Portugal (Automóvel Club de Portugal or ACP) projects a decrease of approximately 12 cents per litre, though the government is tempering the final reduction by adjusting the tax relief on the Tax on Petroleum and Energy Products (Imposto sobre os Produtos Petrolíferos e Energéticos or ISP).

Drivers in Portugal can expect a notable decrease in fuel costs starting next week, with forecasts suggesting a drop of approximately 12 cents per litre for diesel and 12.5 cents for petrol. The Automobile Club of Portugal (Automóvel Club de Portugal or ACP) provided these estimates, though officials warn that final prices at the pump may vary by location and could fluctuate based on global crude oil market conditions.

Fuel prices are set to increase for the third consecutive week starting Monday, with diesel and petrol costs nearing two euros per litre. Socialist Party (Partido Socialista or PS) leader José Luís Carneiro criticized the government for profiting from these hikes, arguing that tax revenues are rising at the expense of families while the government rejects proposals for temporary VAT reductions.

The government will increase tax relief on fuel by 1.5 cents for diesel and 0.85 cents for petrol next week to address rising costs. Despite this adjustment to the Tax on Petroleum Products (Imposto sobre os Produtos Petrolíferos or ISP), diesel prices are still expected to exceed the 2-euro-per-liter threshold.

The government is increasing the tax discount on the Tax on Petroleum and Energy Products (Imposto sobre os Produtos Petrolíferos e Energéticos or ISP) to 7.4 cents per litre for diesel and 4.6 to 5.7 cents for petrol. Minister of the Presidency António Leitão Amaro announced the adjustment this Friday, citing expected market price increases. The government aims to prevent the state from profiting from inflation and rising fuel costs.

Update: Fuel prices set to rise despite tax discount adjustments

Despite the government's updated ISP discounts, fuel prices are expected to increase again next week. Diesel is projected to rise by approximately 6 to 7.5 cents per litre, while petrol prices will also see an upward adjustment.

Fuel prices in Portugal are set to decrease next week, with diesel expected to fall by approximately 11 cents per litre and petrol by five cents. The government has announced a slight reduction in the discount on the petroleum products tax (Imposto sobre os Produtos Petrolíferos or ISP), which will mitigate the total price drop at the pump. Market experts note that these price trends remain dependent on the stability of international tanker traffic.

Fuel prices are expected to decrease by 12 cents per liter for both diesel and petrol between June 1 and June 7. The estimates, provided by the Automobile Club of Portugal (Automóvel Club de Portugal or ACP) based on data from the Directorate-General for Energy and Geology (Direção-Geral de Energia e Geologia or DGEG), may vary by location and gas station.

The government has published an ordinance in the Diário da República reducing the temporary discount on the Tax on Petroleum Products (Imposto sobre os Produtos Petrolíferos or ISP). The adjustment, effective next week, lowers the discount by 1.9 cents for diesel and 1.8 cents for petrol, reflecting expected market price decreases.

Fuel prices in Portugal are expected to change again between May 18 and May 24, with gasoline prices projected to rise by approximately 4 cents per litre. While diesel prices may see a slight decrease of 1 cent, gasoline is expected to become more expensive than diesel, reaching an estimated average of 2.016 euros per litre.

Fuel prices are set to increase this Monday, with diesel rising by approximately 10 cents and petrol by 6.5 cents per litre. In response, the Socialist Party (Partido Socialista or PS) has renewed its call for the government to lower the value-added tax (Imposto sobre o Valor Acrescentado or IVA) on fuel from 23% to 13%. Meanwhile, the price of a 13kg bottle of butane gas has reached a record 39 euros, further impacting household budgets.

The Socialist Party (Partido Socialista or PS) is calling for a reduction in the value-added tax (Imposto sobre o Valor Acrescentado or IVA) on fuel from 23% to 13%. MP João Torres announced plans to summon oil company representatives to Parliament to discuss the measure ahead of a significant price increase expected this week. The PS also renewed its proposal for zero VAT on essential food items, a move the current government continues to reject.

Drivers in Portugal will face higher costs at the pump starting Monday, with diesel prices expected to increase by up to 9.5 cents and petrol by 6 cents per litre. According to the Automobile Club of Portugal (Automóvel Club de Portugal or ACP), the average price for diesel could reach 2.05 euros per litre, while petrol may average 1.99 euros. These forecasts account for recent adjustments to the tax on petroleum products (Imposto sobre os Produtos Petrolíferos or ISP).

Update: Government increases fuel tax discount to mitigate price hikes

In response to the expected price surge, the government has further increased the discount on the ISP. The subsidy for diesel will rise by an additional 1.5 cents, while the petrol subsidy increases by 0.6 cents.

Fuel prices are set to increase significantly starting next week, with diesel rising by approximately 10 cents per litre and 95-octane petrol by 6.5 cents. The government has responded to the expected surge by approving an extraordinary reduction in the tax on petroleum products (Imposto sobre os Produtos Petrolíferos or ISP) to help mitigate the impact on consumers.

Fuel prices in Portugal are expected to increase significantly starting Monday due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East driving up global oil costs. Diesel prices are projected to climb by 9.5 cents per liter, while gasoline is expected to rise by 6 cents, pushing diesel costs back above the 2-euro-per-liter mark.

Fuel prices will shift starting next week, with petrol expected to rise by 2.5 to 3.5 cents per litre. Conversely, diesel prices are set to decrease, with estimates ranging from a 0.9-cent drop to a 4-cent reduction according to the Automóvel Club de Portugal (Automóvel Club de Portugal or ACP). These fluctuations reflect market trends and recent government adjustments to fuel discounts.

Fuel prices will fluctuate starting Monday, April 27, with diesel expected to decrease by 3.2 cents per litre following a government tax discount adjustment. Petrol prices are forecast to rise by 2.5 cents per litre. These figures are estimates from the Automobile Club of Portugal (Automóvel Club de Portugal or ACP) and may vary by location and gas station.

Update: Government reduces diesel tax discount

The government has officially decided to reduce the planned tax discount on diesel. Consequently, the price per litre will drop by 3.2 cents instead of the originally anticipated four-cent decrease. The tax discount for petrol remains unchanged, confirming the expected 2.5-cent increase per litre.

The government is reducing the extraordinary tax discount on diesel by 1.5 cents per liter, while maintaining the current discount for unleaded petrol. This adjustment, published in the Diário da República, follows an expected significant decrease in diesel prices for the coming week. The move aims to balance fuel costs for consumers while managing the temporary tax relief measures.

The government has approved a temporary amendment to the Petroleum Products Tax (Imposto sobre Produtos Petrolíferos or ISP) regime. This measure aims to maintain fiscal relief on fuel prices, which have been rising due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

Fuel prices are scheduled to rise again this coming Monday across Portugal. Diesel is expected to increase by seven to eight cents per litre, while petrol will see a rise of 2.5 cents per litre.

Fuel prices in Portugal are set to increase again on Monday, with diesel expected to rise by up to nine cents per litre and petrol by up to four cents. Despite the government applying a new discount to the tax on petroleum products (Imposto sobre os Produtos Petrolíferos or ISP), international market volatility continues to drive costs higher. This marks the fifth consecutive week of rising prices linked to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

Fuel prices will rise again on Monday, with diesel increasing by eight cents per litre and petrol by three and a half cents. The increase in diesel will thus exceed 50 cents since the war began, and a 50-litre tank will cost, on average, €26 more than it did a month ago.

Fuel prices in mainland Portugal are expected to increase next week due to rising international oil costs. To mitigate the impact, the government will maintain temporary discounts on the tax on petroleum products (Imposto sobre os Produtos Petrolíferos or ISP) for road diesel and unleaded petrol.

Fuel costs in Portugal have risen sharply since the start of the conflict in the Middle East, with diesel prices increasing by 30% and petrol by 14%. A 50-litre tank of diesel now costs approximately 104 euros, up from 80 euros just over a month ago. While the government has extended some tax relief measures, the Bank of Portugal (Banco de Portugal) warns that rising energy costs continue to contribute to economic instability.\n\nUpdate: Diesel prices exceed two euros as sector groups demand support\n\nDiesel prices have risen to 2.232 euros per litre, while petrol prices saw a slight decrease to 1.976 euros. The National Confederation of Agricultural Cooperatives (Confagri) and the National Association of Public Road Freight Carriers (ANTRAM) have both criticized recent government support measures as insufficient to offset rising production costs. Retailers also warned of a significant price increase for gas cylinders (garrafas de gás) starting this Wednesday.

The National Association of Fuel Retailers (Associação Nacional de Revendedores de Combustíveis) expects a slight drop in diesel and petrol prices starting Monday. However, the ongoing conflict in the Middle East has caused Brent oil prices to fluctuate, making final costs at the pump difficult to predict. Some analysts are calling for a reduction in the 23% VAT (IVA) on fuel to provide relief to households facing high living costs. Drivers should check local station prices early next week for potential savings.

Update: Government approves €150 million monthly fuel support package

The government approved a 10-cent-per-liter subsidy for exposed sectors including taxis, agriculture, firefighters, and freight transport. Prime Minister Luís Montenegro rejected calls for a VAT reduction on fuel or food, stating the country must maintain its status of financial stability. Those in the transport and agricultural sectors should note the support is estimated to cost €150 million per month.

Drivers in Portugal will face a significant increase at the pumps this Monday, with diesel prices expected to rise by 12 cents per liter and petrol by seven cents. The Automobile Club of Portugal (Automóvel Clube de Portugal or ACP) has criticized the government's tax relief measures as insufficient to offset the global price surge. Travelers should note that the state continues to collect substantial revenue through the fuel tax (Imposto sobre os Produtos Petrolíferos or ISP) despite the current crisis.

The government has updated the discount on the tax on petroleum products (Imposto sobre os Produtos Petrolíferos or ISP), setting the rate at 28.5 cents per liter for diesel and 45.6 cents for petrol starting Monday. Despite the adjustment, diesel costs have risen significantly due to international tensions, with a full tank now costing roughly €23 more than before the Middle East conflict. Drivers should expect simple diesel (gasóleo simples) to exceed €2 per liter at many stations.

Prime Minister Luís Montenegro has promised to use regulatory power to prevent fuel price speculation as costs at some stations again exceed two euros per liter. Energy Minister Maria da Graça Carvalho stated that while the market is tense, Portugal has not yet reached an 'energy emergency' that would trigger more drastic measures. Drivers should note that the government plans to release 10% of strategic oil reserves to help stabilize the market, though taxi federations are already requesting extraordinary support.

Minister of Environment and Energy Maria da Graça Carvalho stated that fuel prices (preços dos combustíveis) could decrease next week if international Brent crude prices remain low through Friday. The government is monitoring the impact of the Middle East conflict on energy costs and is prepared to offer tax relief via the tax on petroleum products (Imposto sobre os Produtos Petrolíferos or ISP). Drivers should note that a discount applies if prices rise by more than 10 cents.

Update: Portugal to release 10% of strategic oil reserves

Prime Minister Luís Montenegro announced that Portugal will release two million barrels of oil—roughly 10% of its strategic reserves—to help stabilize fuel prices. This move follows an International Energy Agency agreement to release 400 million barrels globally due to supply risks in the Strait of Hormuz.

The government is confident that the European Commission will not oppose its temporary discount on the Tax on Petroleum and Energy Products (Imposto sobre os Produtos Petrolíferos or ISP) for diesel. Finance Minister Joaquim Miranda Sarmento stated that the measure is extraordinary and temporary, designed to mitigate the impact of high energy prices caused by conflict in the Middle East. Drivers should note that the discount is intended to provide immediate relief at the pump while the government monitors international oil market volatility. The tax relief remains a key part of the national strategy to manage rising living costs.

Diesel prices in Portugal are set to rise by about €0.19 and petrol by roughly €0.07 next Monday, prompting long queues at filling stations as motorists top up in advance. Consumer group DECO PROteste warned higher fuel costs will ripple through the economy, increasing transport and food prices, while analysts flag fertilizer supply pressures tied to Brent crude and tensions around the Strait of Hormuz. The price shock has also prompted political pushback, with some parties demanding an urgent parliamentary debate on relief measures. Drivers and shoppers should expect higher local transport and grocery costs in the coming weeks.

Update: Chega leader calls for VAT return, urgent debate

André Ventura, leader of Chega, challenged the government to “return to taxpayers” the extra VAT (IVA (Imposto sobre o Valor Acrescentado)) revenue generated by the coming fuel-price rise and said his party will ask for an urgent debate in the Assembleia da República next week; he also described the government’s 3.55‑cent ISP (Imposto sobre Produtos Petrolíferos or ISP) discount as insufficient.

Expresso reports the war in the Middle East has driven oil to one-year highs and European gas futures up by about 40%, a rise that is expected to affect consumer energy costs in Portugal. Analysts say fuels are likely to reflect the increases first, possibly as early as next week, which could push up household and transport costs. The immediate effect will be felt at the pumps and in short-term energy bills; longer-term impacts depend on how commodity markets and supply routes evolve. Drivers and households with tight budgets should monitor fuel prices and consider short-term cost-saving measures.
