Teacher Retirements: March Begins with 250 Fewer Educators in Schools

📍 Porto🎓 Education#teacher-shortage+3 more

The increasing number of teacher retirements is causing difficulties in the regular functioning of the education system, with the northern region, previously 'immune' to the severe shortage of teachers affecting the south of the country, now showing signs of significant constraints. Arlindo Ferreira, director of the Cego do Maio school group in Póvoa de Varzim and author of the education blog 'ArLindo', expressed concern over the situation, citing examples of students in their final year without a Portuguese teacher for a month. He noted that retirements are a contributing factor to a structural problem that has expanded beyond the south. As of the start of March, schools will have 250 fewer teachers due to retirements. The FENPROF union has also raised alarms about the escalating issue of teacher shortages, reporting a significant increase in hiring needs compared to previous years. The official number of students without classes this academic year is not yet known, as the Ministry of Education is implementing a new counting method.
