A motorcyclist died this Saturday following a collision with a fire department vehicle in Amarante. The fire truck was en route to assist with firefighting efforts in the neighboring municipality of Celorico de Basto when the accident occurred, leaving three firefighters injured.
A 78-year-old man from Amarante, who had been missing since Monday, August 31, was found this Friday, September 4, by the Porto Territorial Command of the National Republican Guard (GNR). The elderly man was found alive at 10:10 am by a Search and Rescue K-9 unit, consisting of a soldier and the dog Arka from the Viseu Territorial Command, on a dirt path in a forest area. The GNR search operations involved various territorial and intervention units, reinforced by an Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) team from the Emergency Protection and Relief Unit (UEPS) and K-9 teams. After being located, medical emergency services were immediately called, and the man was transported to a hospital for evaluation. The GNR highlighted the success of the operation, noting the importance of coordination between different operational capabilities, such as K-9 units and drones, in search and rescue missions. In other news, the GNR warns of 'fake accident' scams, with losses exceeding 72,000 euros, and reports a 7.1% increase in GNR applications compared to the last recruitment drive.
