The exceptional rise of the Guadiana River has flooded roads and left boats adrift in Alcoutim, in a scenario not seen for 29 years. Authorities are maintaining surveillance and rescue operations along the banks.

According to the official, the water level “is stable, at about six metres, and is expected to start decreasing during the low tide period.”

The Portuguese Society for the Study of Birds (SPEA) has called on authorities to refuse plans for a wind-power project in Alcoutim, citing serious environmental harm.

Irish firm WElink wants to combine 25 wind turbines with 660,000 solar panels in the Algarve, but the ICNF is opposed. The reworking of the hybrid project is open for public consultation until 4 February.
