Electric trains are set to begin full service on the Algarve line this Sunday, marking the end of a project that began over two decades ago. The upgrade is expected to reduce travel time between Lagos and Vila Real de Santo António by 45 minutes. Meanwhile, the government confirmed that the diesel trains previously used on this route will be redeployed to support rail services in the Alentejo and Western regions.

The latest recruitment competition for the National Health Service (Serviço Nacional de Saúde or SNS) resulted in the hiring of 273 new family doctors and 36 public health specialists. Although 62 percent of the 711 available vacancies remain unfilled, the Central Administration of the Health System (Administração Central do Sistema de Saúde or ACSS) expects these new hires to provide care for over 400,000 patients. This recruitment round represents an 18 percent increase in family doctor placements compared to last year.

Starting July 19, the entire Algarve rail line will operate with electric trains. The national rail operator, CP - Comboios de Portugal, is using the transition to overhaul its commercial schedule, which will increase service frequency, eliminate the need for transfers, and reduce travel times.

The Ministry of Environment has ordered the installation of maps at the entrances of beaches in the Algarve and Alentejo regions. These maps will clearly delineate concession areas, safety strips, and free zones to help beachgoers identify where they can place their parasols.

Expenditure on temporary doctors, known as tarefeiros, reached 249.7 million euros in 2025, marking a 17% increase from the previous year. The National Health Service (Serviço Nacional de Saúde or SNS) relies on these contracts to maintain emergency department operations, with the Algarve Local Health Unit reporting the highest costs.
