A network providing logistical support for international maritime drug trafficking was dismantled following a police operation in the municipalities of Montijo and Palmela, in the Setúbal district, the GNR announced this Saturday, July 25. The operation, carried out on Thursday and Friday, led to the identification and dismantling of a network allegedly responsible for building, equipping, transporting, and launching high-speed vessels into the Sado River estuary. Authorities seized two high-speed boats, two fishing vessels, several vehicles, 300 kilograms of dried opium poppy capsules, and various logistical equipment. One 53-year-old man was arrested, and four other suspects were named as formal defendants.
During the operation in the Setúbal district, a light goods vehicle transporting approximately 300 kilograms of dried opium poppy capsules was also intercepted. The driver was arrested.
