  • 1665: Portugal wins the decisive Battle of Montes Claros, near Borba in the Alentejo, under the command of António Luís de Meneses, Marquis of Marialva. An invading Spanish army under the Marquis of Caracena is destroyed, ending Madrid's hopes of reconquering Portugal and effectively closing the Restoration War.
  • 1922: Naval aviators Sacadura Cabral and Gago Coutinho land in Guanabara Bay aboard the Fairey III-D seaplane 'Santa Cruz', completing the first aerial crossing of the South Atlantic.
