Regions south of the Tagus river are experiencing a heatwave, with Mora reaching 40.3ºC on Wednesday, an absolute record for the month of May, as reported this Thursday, May 28. According to the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), the previous absolute May records of 40ºC, set in Pinhão in 1953 and Termas de Monfortinho in 2001, were surpassed in Mora and Alvega. Updated data shows 16 automatic stations are currently in a heatwave. While the warm spell affects the entire mainland, the heatwave began on May 20 in the Alentejo and Tagus valley regions. The IPMA warns of a high probability that more locations, particularly in the north and interior centre, will enter a heatwave, which may persist into early June.
