Clandestine care home in Sintra closed by authorities

📍 Sintra⚖️ Legal🩺 Health#public-safety+3 more

The Social Security Institute (Instituto da Segurança Social or ISS) has closed an illegal nursing home in São João das Lampas, Sintra, citing imminent danger to the 22 elderly residents. Authorities have relocated all residents to licensed social care facilities and contacted their families.

The Social Security Institute (Instituto da Segurança Social) is the public agency that runs Portugal’s social security system, administering pensions, unemployment benefits, family support and local social services. It also coordinates emergency social responses through local offices and mobile teams — for example, the institute mobilized over 200 technicians after recent storms and supported 1,537 displaced people as of 14 February; residents affected should contact their local Social Security office or municipal authority for assistance.

Sicasal creditors decide on sale to Portral for 11.5 million and a 76.2% debt haircut

📍 Lisboa⚖️ Legal💶 Finance#legal-reforms+1 more

Sicasal creditors are meeting at the Sintra court to vote on an insolvency plan that includes selling the meat company to Portral for 11.5 million euros. The plan involves a 76.2% reduction in debt for common creditors, who will receive only 23.8% of their claims. While employees, tax authorities, and social security are expected to be paid in full, the total sale proceeds will only cover a small portion of the 46.4 million euro debt owed to approximately 400 creditors. The operation aims to ensure business continuity and job retention, as the company faces an ongoing investigation into whether the insolvency was caused by the actions of its partners and administrators.

Odair Moniz case: verdict to be delivered this Monday

📍 Lisboa⚖️ Legal🏛️ Government#crime-report+2 more

Eight months after the trial began, the verdict in the case of Odair Moniz, who was killed during a police stop in Cova da Moura, will be delivered. The reading of the judgment is scheduled for 3:30 pm this Monday, June 15, at the Sintra Court. At that time, it will be known whether Public Security Police (PSP) officer Bruno Pinto will be convicted for the death of Odair Moniz. In closing arguments held in May, the Public Prosecutor's Office requested the officer's conviction for homicide, arguing there was no self-defence. Prosecutors stated it should be considered unproven that Moniz was armed with a knife. Judicial Police (PJ) professionals testified that no knife existed, noting that surveillance footage does not show Moniz using one. If convicted, the officer faces a prison sentence of eight to 16 years, and the prosecution has requested he be barred from serving in the police force.

Sintra: Court of Auditors gives green light to purchase 39 refuse collection trucks

📍 Lisboa🚇 Infrastructure🏛️ Government#public-services+2 more

Sintra City Council received confirmation this Friday, June 12, that the Court of Auditors has granted prior approval for the acquisition of 39 new waste collection vehicles, representing an investment of approximately 12 million euros. According to the municipality, the vehicles will be delivered in phases throughout the year to replace part of the current fleet, which includes vehicles over a decade old. This reinforcement is part of a broader investment in urban hygiene, including the replacement of 1,500 recycling bins for over 600,000 euros. The goal is to improve working conditions for staff in the country's second most populous municipality, where 560 tonnes of waste are collected daily. Marco Almeida described the court's decision as a victory, noting that the previous administration's plan to lease 69 trucks for 70.5 million euros was cancelled due to concerns over financial sustainability and potential tariff increases for residents.
