PSP: Over 40% of arrests this week were for road traffic offences

📍 Lisboa⚖️ Legal🚇 Infrastructure#public-safety+1 more

More than 40% of all arrests made by the Public Security Police (PSP) this week were due to road traffic offences. In total, the force recorded 674 arrests nationwide, with 281 related to traffic. The figures cover the period from 11 to 17 April and were released on Friday morning, 18 April. Of those arrested for traffic offences, 127 were for drink-driving and 123 for driving without a valid licence. The PSP also issued 4,114 infringement notices, a 17% increase on the previous week. During 350 road safety operations, 13,251 drivers were checked and 45,726 vehicles were monitored by radar. The PSP highlighted 789 cases of speeding, 477 for lack of mandatory periodic inspection, and 119 for mobile phone use while driving. Portuguese roads saw 1,069 accidents, resulting in 331 injuries (15 serious and 316 minor). Two people died in a collision in the municipality of Odivelas. The PSP appealed for caution, urging drivers to adapt to weather and road conditions and to avoid behaviours that impair driving ability, such as speeding, drink-driving, or using mobile phones. This week also saw the announcement of the return of the National Republican Guard (GNR) traffic brigade, part of a government plan to reduce accidents, which also includes a new Highway Code and the end of pre-announced police stop operations.
