Geography teachers report third potential grading error in exams

📍 Odivelas🎓 Education🏛️ Government#education-quality+2 more

The Association of Geography Teachers has requested an urgent review of the automatic grading parameters for item 12.1 in the Geography A national exam. This follows two previously identified errors in the same test, prompting teachers to contact the National Exams Jury and the president of EduQA, Luís Santos, to ensure fair assessment for the 16,714 students who took the exam.

Lawyer detained for embezzling Golden Visa applicant funds

📍 Odivelas⚖️ Legal🛂 Immigration#golden-visa+3 more

A 58-year-old lawyer was placed in pre-trial detention after being arrested by the Judiciary Police (Polícia Judiciária or PJ) on suspicion of embezzling 1.2 million euros from foreign clients. The suspect allegedly used funds intended for Golden Visa (Autorização de Residência para Atividade de Investimento) applications for personal use, with at least 33 victims identified.

Polícia Judiciária

The PJ (Polícia Judiciária) is Portugal's national criminal investigation police agency, founded in 1945. Operating under the Ministry of Justice and supervised by the Public Ministry (prosecutors), the PJ is a "higher criminal police body" specializing in serious and complex crimes. Mission: The PJ assists judicial and prosecuting authorities by investigating terrorism, organized crime, homicide, kidnapping, drug trafficking, corruption, cybercrime, financial crime, and money laundering. It conducts forensic examinations, operates Portugal's Interpol and Europol liaison offices, and maintains specialized units including the National Counterterrorism Unit and National Anti-Corruption Unit. Difference from PSP/GNR: While PSP (civilian urban police) and GNR (military rural police) focus on preventive policing, public order, and investigating minor crimes, the PJ exclusively handles serious crime investigation requiring specialized technical and scientific expertise. PSP and GNR report to the Ministry of Internal Affairs; PJ reports to the Ministry of Justice. PJ officers receive higher pay and prestige but face greater operational risk.

15,000 requests for re-evaluation of national exams

📍 Lisboa🎓 Education🏛️ Government#education-quality+2 more

The Ministry of Education has received 15,000 requests for exam re-evaluations, more than double the 6,200 recorded during the first phase last year. Minister Fernando Alexandre attributed the increase to a new assessment method where multiple teachers grade different parts of an exam, leading to more scores just below the passing threshold of 9.5. Despite technical issues with the new digital grading system that delayed results, the Ministry maintains that no student will be disadvantaged and has kept the university application deadlines unchanged.

Only 304 applications on the first day of the higher education access competition. Last year, there were 10,000

📍 Lisboa🎓 Education⚖️ Legal#higher-education+1 more

Only 304 students applied on the first day of the first phase of the national competition for access to public higher education, a figure that exceeded 10,000 during the same period last year. The discrepancy is likely due to doubts students still have regarding their grades from the first round, following failures in the digital grading system. The controversy stems from recent issues with the exam grading process, including cases where grades were altered due to technical errors or incorrect grade lists were posted, as admitted by Minister of Education Fernando Alexandre. Student associations have expressed distrust in the results, and the Lisbon Academic Federation has raised concerns about the implications for fair access to higher education. The Ministry of Education has clarified that students requesting a review of their first-phase exams may still use the updated grades for their application even after the August 5th deadline. Despite the technical failures in the new digital grading system, the Ministry has maintained the original competition schedule.

Lifelines: messaging apps help police find missing persons

📍 Lisboa⚖️ Legal🏖️ Daily Life#public-safety+1 more

In a recent case in the Odivelas area, the Portuguese Public Security Police (PSP) successfully located a missing 14-year-old with cognitive difficulties using WhatsApp. The minor was able to communicate their location and send photos, highlighting how digital tools can serve as unexpected channels for rescue. Forensic psychologist Rute Agulhas explains that for many young people, the screen acts as an 'emotional buffer,' reducing the anxiety associated with traditional police interaction. While the case was resolved through the minor's voluntary cooperation, it sparks a broader discussion on the need for institutionalized digital communication channels for emergency services and the balance between privacy laws and the urgent need to protect vulnerable individuals.
