Infrastructure: Telecommunications news in Portugal

Five months after Storm Kristin, approximately 15% of the population in Figueiró dos Vinhos remains without internet or television access. Mayor Carlos Lopes stated that telecommunications operators have cited an overwhelming workload and a lack of resources as the primary reasons for the ongoing delays in restoring services.

The Competition Authority (Autoridade da Concorrência or AdC) has imposed fines totaling 13.35 million euros on Meo, NOS, Vodafone, and the consultancy firm Accenture. The penalties relate to an anti-competitive agreement involving subscription television services and advertising in television recordings. While Meo has reportedly reached an agreement to avoid further legal action, other companies have indicated they will challenge the decision.

Telecommunications operator NOS recorded a 4.7% increase in net income during the first quarter of 2026, reaching 62 million euros. Consolidated revenue also grew by 1.9% to 460.2 million euros, driven by strong performance in the IT and cinema segments. This growth occurred despite infrastructure damage caused by severe storms in the central region of the country.

Telecom operators Meo and Nos report that fixed network services in areas hit by recent storms are nearly fully restored, with completion expected by April 30. While mobile networks are already back to normal, fixed-line repairs require rebuilding entire sections of infrastructure damaged by the weather. Affected customers are expected to receive automatic credits on their bills for the period they were without service.
