Infrastructure: Metro expansion news in Portugal

Metropolitano de Lisboa will suspend subway service between Terreiro do Paço and Santa Apolónia starting in early November until 2028 to accommodate city drainage works. The Lisbon City Council (Câmara Municipal de Lisboa) approved an alternative surface transit plan relying on reinforced bus routes operated by Carris, rejecting proposals for a dedicated shuttle. The municipality will also pay €2.6 million in financial compensation to the metro operator during the construction period.

The Council of Ministers has approved a €421 million expansion for the Porto Metro, adding lines to Gondomar and Trofa by 2031. Additionally, the government will increase funding for the Metro Mondego project by up to €66 million to support transport services in the Coimbra region.

The Cais do Sodré station of the Lisbon Metro reopens this Thursday at 6:30 am following a 19-day closure. The shutdown was necessary to facilitate railway signaling works connected to the development of the new Circular Line (Linha Circular).

The proposed Porto Metro line connecting Estádio do Dragão to the centre of Gondomar will require the removal of up to 533 trees and the demolition of 24 buildings. The project is currently under public consultation until 15 September, with officials evaluating two route alternatives. The study identifies that the underground option would result in a lower environmental impact compared to surface routes.

The Cais do Sodré metro station in Lisbon will be closed to the public from August 8 to August 26. The closure is required for railway signalling upgrades as part of the construction of the new Circular Line, with bus services provided by Carris as an alternative.

The Metropolitano de Lisboa has postponed the phased closure of platforms at the Praça de Espanha station by 21 days due to scheduling changes. The Santa Apolónia-bound platform will now close from August 10 to 30, while the Reboleira-bound platform closure is set for August 31 to September 20. Additionally, the reopening of the station's north atrium is delayed by three weeks until August 17.

The Lisbon Metro will launch a pilot project in October to begin daily operations one hour earlier, at 5:30 AM. The initiative aims to address evolving mobility needs, with the potential for permanent adoption of the earlier schedule planned for 2027.

The Lisbon Metro (Metropolitano de Lisboa) will suspend service on the Green Line between Rossio and Cais do Sodré from May 2 to May 5. The closure is required for construction work related to the new circular line project, with normal operations expected to resume on May 6.

The European Commission has intervened in the Lisbon Metro expansion project, forcing the consortium led by Mota-Engil to replace a Chinese subcontractor with a Polish supplier. The decision follows an investigation which determined that the Chinese firm, CRRC, benefited from unfair foreign subsidies. This ruling affects the construction of the new Violet Line, which is designed to connect Lisbon to the municipalities of Odivelas and Loures.

Construction of the Porto Metro's new Rubi Line, designed to connect Casa da Música to Santo Ovídio, has faced significant delays. The completion deadline has been pushed back by over a year, with the project now expected to finish in July 2028. Previous forecasts had suggested the line would be operational by 2026 or 2027.

The government has approved an additional €48 million to complete the Lisbon metro expansion connecting Rato to Cais do Sodré. This increase brings the total project cost to €380 million, which is 80% higher than the initial 2018 forecast. Minister of the Presidency António Leitão Amaro confirmed the funding during a press conference following the Council of Ministers meeting.
