Diamantino Diogo é uma das figuras da história do cooperativismo nos últimos 50 anos. Entrou para a Caixa Agrícola de Coruche em 1981. E rapidamente o seu lema tornou-se dogma: “Autonomia com a máxima responsabilidade.” Um caminho rápido que o levou a liderar a sua Caixa, mas também a presidir à Caixa Central e a ocupar a vice-presidência da Confagri. Chamam-lhe na terra o eterno presidente da Câmara precisamente por nunca o ter sido. A Caixa de Coruche tornou-se referência absoluta e ele saiu das suas funções, em 2014, mais do que apaziguado. Não nos apressemos. Nasceu em Coruche a meio da Segunda Guerra. Os pais, proprietários de um hectare e meio de terra sem rentabilidade, viam-se a braços para criar os quatro filhos. Diamantino, o mais velho dos rapazes, perguntava ao pai para onde ia estudar quando terminasse a 4.ª classe, mas as dificuldades da família ceifaram-lhe o sonho, o seu destino era o de trabalhar na terra de sol a sol. Não desistiu, insistia todos os dias até que, aos 11 anos, entrou para o seminário. Entretanto, as dificuldades financeiras dos pais aumentaram e aos 14 começou a trabalhar na Cáritas Portuguesa. Era um tempo difícil, por todo o país: inúmeras famílias passavam por situações de carência. A Cáritas distribuía alimentos e Diamantino começava às 5h00 da manhã e acabava às 9h00 da noite, era o responsável pela pesagem e distribuição das sacas de farinha e leite em pó. Ganhava 300 escudos e essa foi a sua vida até aos 21 anos. Não fazemos ideia de como encontrou tempo, mas o certo é que, apesar da vida dura, arranjou tempo para fundar o Agrupamento de Escuteiros 119 de Coruche. Adotou o cavalo como totem, símbolo da força interior e da liberdade de espírito. Foi vários anos mentor de aventuras de 150 crianças do concelho.Matutava com a falta de estudos e resolveu o problema matriculando-se em Évora onde completou o Secundário. Vivia na casa de uma senhora que alugava quartos a jovens que, como ele, vinham de fora para estudar na capital alentejana. Na cidade-museu calcorreou travessas, frequentou cafés e gritou os golos do Lusitano. Em pleno Arcada, enquanto bebia imperiais com os amigos, foi confundido com Falé, glória do Lusitano Ginásio Clube de Évora, que era sapateiro de profissão. Foi risada geral, dele e dos amigos eborenses. Amigos influentes, já agora. António dos Santos Júnior, fundador do Círculo de Cultura Musical, era o seu mais próximo. Chegaria, aliás, a governador civil, honra quase suprema nesses tempos de Estado Novo. Andavam sempre juntos.Ainda não escrevemos Idália, o nome de uma rapariga de São Marcos do Campo, aldeia a Sul de Reguengos de Monsaraz, que tinha ido, como ele, estudar para Évora, e que frequentava a mesma igreja e vivia na mesma casa. Namoraram, está claro. Um amor atravessado pela Guerra do Ultramar. O Serviço Militar era obrigatório e a viagem de barco para Angola, Guiné ou Moçambique, quase uma certeza. As namoradas tinham de esperar. E Idália esperou. A guerra deixou-lhe marcas profundas, Diamantino esteve em Angola, nas zonas mais aguerridas, onde as tropas portuguesas usavam velhas espingardas Mauser e capacetes de aço, armamento obsoleto do tempo da II Guerra Mundial. Em Luanda, aproveitou para aprender alemão.Depois da guerra, regressou a Évora e tornou-se funcionário do Totta. Idália dava aulas em Palmela e os dois pediram transferência para Coruche, o que lhes foi concedido. O casamento e uma vida estável não acalmaram Diamantino. Fez à noite o curso de Direito, tinha 39 anos quando recebeu o diploma. Saía do banco em Coruche às 17h30, seguia para Lisboa e regressava a casa depois da 1h00 da manhã. Dispersámo-nos pela sua história, difícil não o fazer. Regressemos à sua Caixa Agrícola. No princípio da década de 1980, o Totta é engolido pela Caixa Geral de Depósitos e Diamantino faz-se outra vez à vida. Os primeiros anos da Caixa de Coruche são logo um sucesso. Resgata 3300 clientes à concorrência. Coruche é uma das regiões mais ricas de Portugal com 17 mil hectares de regadio. Durante 30 anos, a sua Caixa nunca deixou de ter uma enorme liquidez.Diamantino Diogo embrenha-se no cooperativismo e entra para a direção da Caixa Central. Tempos de muito trabalho e de algum arrependimento. O seu lema de vida “autonomia com a máxima responsabilidade” fora comprometido. Embora tivesse feito sentido na altura, o parecer vinculativo foi um erro, precisamente por implicar a perda total de autonomia. Em jeito de desabafo, saúda as Caixas que ficaram de fora do Sicam e felicita os que conseguiram manter o seu lema. O homem a quem chamam “o eterno presidente da Câmara”, precisamente por nunca o ter sido, transformou a Caixa de Coruche na maior do país. Saiu em 2014, mas continua ativo e focado na missão de ajudar a terra e o próximo. Tem dois filhos e três netos. É juiz da Irmandade de Nossa Senhora do Castelo e presidente do Lar e Creche de S. José. Uma parceria com a Agrimútuo
