An operation to remove the invasive species in Mação resulted in the removal of triple the expected amount of wels catfish. “These invasive species are here to stay and we will have to manage them forever,” warns researcher Filipe Ribeiro.

The wels catfish, which has no natural predators, feeds on species such as the European eel, allis shad, lamprey, and barbel, fish associated with fishing activity and traditional gastronomy.

Originating from Eastern Europe, the wels catfish is considered one of the most concerning invasive species in Portuguese river ecosystems.

“It is shameful what is happening in the municipality of Mação; we have piles of fallen poles, wires on the ground, and locations still without communications,” stated the Mayor, José Fernandes.

Seguro's first Open Presidency revealed pressure and oversight. The Government only received the programme on the eve of the event.

António José Seguro warns that the clearing of forest paths and firebreaks is behind schedule. The Head of State wants generators in critical infrastructure such as hospitals.
