Environment: Heatwave news in Portugal

The Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera or IPMA) has issued a warning for a gradual rise in temperatures starting this Saturday. A warm, dry air mass is expected to push maximum temperatures to 38°C in the Alentejo and Tagus Valley regions. The institute suggests that this weather pattern could lead to another heatwave across the country.

The Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera or IPMA) has issued yellow weather warnings for 13 districts across mainland Portugal due to extreme heat. Temperatures are expected to peak at 38 ºC in interior regions before a shift in atmospheric circulation brings cooler weather on Tuesday. The Madeira archipelago is also under a heat warning, with regional authorities maintaining a strict ban on open fires and agricultural burning.

The Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera or IPMA) has issued yellow warnings for high temperatures across several districts in mainland Portugal and Madeira. The alerts, which remain in effect until Monday, highlight a persistent period of heat that has also increased the risk of wildfires in many municipalities.

The Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera or IPMA) has issued a yellow warning for seven districts due to high maximum temperatures. The alert affects Beja, Castelo Branco, Évora, Faro, Lisbon, Setúbal, and Portalegre, with temperatures potentially reaching 38 degrees Celsius. The warning remains in effect until 9:00 PM today.

The Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera or IPMA) has issued a yellow warning for high temperatures across most of the country for Sunday. Only the district of Faro is currently exempt from the heat-related risk alert.

The Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera or IPMA) has issued a yellow warning (aviso amarelo) for high temperatures in nine districts. The heat is expected to persist in Viseu, Évora, Faro, Beja, and Portalegre until Saturday evening, with temperatures potentially reaching 39 degrees Celsius.

The Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera or IPMA) has placed mainland Portugal under a yellow warning for high temperatures starting Monday. Meteorologists expect temperatures to reach 40ºC in some districts due to a hot air mass moving in from Spain, prompting authorities to advise caution.

Recent heatwave conditions have resulted in nearly 200 excess deaths across Portugal over the last five days, with 62 deaths recorded on Monday alone. While the World Health Organization (WHO) warns that European nations must treat the heat as a public health emergency, the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) currently rules out an extreme scenario for the country.

Update: Heatwave linked to 63 excess deaths

The Secretary of State for Health confirmed that 63 excess deaths have been directly associated with the recent heatwave as of July 6. Authorities noted that while demand for the SNS 24 health line and emergency services has increased, the overall pressure on hospital emergency departments remains manageable.

The Portuguese government has extended the state of alert in ten districts until Thursday at 23:59 due to ongoing extreme heat and wildfire risks. This measure, authorized under the Civil Protection Basic Law (Lei de Bases de Proteção Civil), prohibits activities such as agricultural burning, the use of heavy machinery in forested areas, and fireworks. The Ministry of Internal Administration (Ministério da Administração Interna or MAI) confirmed the extension to maintain safety protocols during this period of high meteorological adversity.

The Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera or IPMA) has placed 13 districts under a red weather warning this weekend due to extreme heat. The Directorate-General of Health (Direção-Geral da Saúde or DGS) has raised the national risk level to orange, allowing hospitals to postpone non-urgent activities to manage the increased demand. Meanwhile, train operator Fertagus has reduced some services due to air conditioning failures caused by the high temperatures.

Update: Health Minister warns of difficult days ahead

Health Minister Ana Paula Martins has expressed concern over the heatwave, urging the public to stay hydrated and protect the elderly. The DGS reports increased pressure on emergency services, and the Icarus Index predicts that heat-related mortality could reach a 13-year record high this Sunday.

The Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera or IPMA) has issued warnings for a prolonged heatwave starting Monday, with temperatures expected to reach 44°C in some areas. The extreme weather, characterized by tropical nights and low humidity, will primarily affect the interior, Centre, and Alentejo regions, significantly increasing fire risks.

Update: Health Minister warns of heatwave mortality risks

Minister of Health Ana Paula Martins has acknowledged that the extreme temperatures may increase mortality rates in Portugal. She stated that the National Health Service (Serviço Nacional de Saúde or SNS) is prepared for the heat, while also noting that the country will increasingly need to rely on the private sector to manage healthcare demand due to a growing resident population.

High temperatures are expected to persist throughout the coming week, with Portugal remaining affected by the heatwave.

World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus announced that Europe has recorded over 1,300 excess deaths linked to extreme heat since June 21. The WHO warns that the continent is warming twice as fast as the global average, with homes and workplaces often ill-equipped to handle the rising temperatures.

The Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera or IPMA) has warned of a new heatwave starting midweek, with temperatures expected to surpass 40ºC in the Ribatejo and Alentejo regions. The event follows a broader European heatwave that has already broken records and caused multiple deaths across the continent, placing significant strain on public health and infrastructure.

Update: New heatwave brings tropical nights and 40ºC temperatures

Environment Minister Maria da Graça Carvalho warned that the country must adapt to frequent extreme weather events. The latest forecast indicates the arrival of tropical nights starting Wednesday, with maximum temperatures consistently exceeding 40ºC by the end of the week.

The Portuguese Institute for the Sea and the Atmosphere (Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera or IPMA) has issued weather warnings as a hot air mass from North Africa pushes temperatures as high as 42ºC. While coastal areas remain cooler, interior regions face extreme heat and the prospect of tropical nights with temperatures staying above 20ºC. Three districts are currently under an orange alert, with eleven others under a yellow warning.

The Portuguese Development Bank (Banco Português de Fomento or BPF) is studying the implementation of public guarantees to assist middle-income families in accessing home ownership. BPF president Gonçalo Regalado indicated that the bank aims to mobilize 1.5 billion euros this year to support housing supply and credit accessibility.

Minister of Labour Maria do Rosário Palma Ramalho received a standing ovation at the Social Democratic Party (Partido Social Democrata or PSD) congress after the government's labour reform bill was rejected in Parliament. Prime Minister Luís Montenegro accused opposition parties of immaturity, while the government signaled it will continue to pursue these reforms despite the legislative setback.

The Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera or IPMA) has issued yellow warnings for mainland Portugal due to a combination of high temperatures and thunderstorms. The North and Centre regions are expected to see storm activity, while Lisbon, Leiria, the Tagus Valley, and the Alentejo face heat-related risks.
