A 43-year-old man is suspected of usurping military functions, dangerous driving, and possession of a prohibited weapon. Reports made on social media indicate that the suspect was operating in São João da Pesqueira.

A 43-year-old man has been named as a formal suspect for impersonating an officer of the National Republican Guard (GNR) in São João da Pesqueira and Samora Correia, the security force announced on Tuesday, May 19. The Viseu Territorial Command's Criminal Investigation Unit identified the suspect for alleged crimes of usurpation of functions, dangerous driving, and possession of a prohibited weapon. The investigation began in February following reports on social media from victims who were stopped by the suspect, who claimed to be a GNR traffic officer despite not wearing a uniform. Police conducted five searches, seizing various items including ammunition, emergency lights, communication equipment, and weapons. The case has been referred to the Judicial Court of Moimenta da Beira. Separately, one-third of GNR applicants failed their psychological tests.
