1813: At the Battle of Vitoria, in northern Spain, the Marquis of Wellington routs the army of King Joseph Bonaparte. The Anglo-Portuguese-Spanish force effectively ends French rule in Spain and brings the Peninsular War to its decisive close, with Portuguese brigades — veterans of six years of campaigning — playing a central role in the victory.
1947: The political police of the Estado Novo (PIDE) arrests several student leaders at the University of Lisbon, including the young Mário Soares, Salgado Zenha and Rui Grácio. The arrests galvanise an emerging generation of democratic opposition that would shape Portuguese politics for the next half century.
