The measure aims to ensure a minimum income for these winegrowers, preventing vineyard abandonment and the degradation of the wine landscape and the region's productive potential. It is an income support measure, not a supply management or regulation tool, granted under the agricultural 'de minimis' regime. Many producers are currently in the final stages of the harvest, which began earlier this year in the RDD. Producers have faced worsening difficulties in selling their harvest and low grape prices, often below production costs. Following a decrease in production to 178,000 pipes (550 liters each) last year, grape disposal issues have intensified, with many growers complaining of a lack of buyers or only being able to sell the 'benefício' portion—the amount of must allowed for Port wine production—at low prices.
