Between 1 January and 31 May 2026, 57 people died by drowning in Portugal, according to provisional data released by the Drowning Observatory of the Portuguese Federation of Lifeguards (FEPONS). This figure is almost identical to the 58 deaths recorded in the same period of 2024, which was the worst comparable period since the Observatory began tracking data in 2017. In the first three months of the year alone, 36 deaths were recorded in aquatic environments, a 28.6% increase compared to the same period last year. Rivers accounted for the majority of incidents between January and March, with 17 victims, followed by the sea, flooded roads, wells, and dams. Coimbra was the most affected district, and 69.4% of victims were men, particularly in the 20-24 age group. FEPONS highlights that all incidents occurred in areas without lifeguard supervision and calls for a coordinated national response focused on prevention.
