Home News New bathing waters in Portugal unveiled New bathing waters in Portugal unveiled The Azores have 88 approved bathing waters for this year, one more than in 2025. This increase follows the reopening of the islet of Vila Franca do Campo on São Miguel, as it was announced.

The Vila Franca do Campo islet, a nature reserve in São Miguel, was closed to swimmers last summer. Only 400 people per day are allowed on the islet, with a limit of 200 people inside the crater at any one time.

The island will now have a total of 25 bathing water locations.

Applications, open for 15 business days, are intended to cover property losses caused by the March 1st phenomenon, which destroyed pineapple greenhouses in the parish of São Miguel.

The suspect, who has a criminal record, allegedly committed 'a crime of theft of a speaker'. He then approached a man, using aggression to 'steal his disability pension'.

Tests reveal that the water is no longer contaminated. However, as “cleaning and maintenance work on the network” is still ongoing, the council advises the public to boil it as a precaution.
