🌱 Environment 🩺 Health#severe-weather+2 more

Extreme heat caused more than 50,000 excess deaths across urban areas in 30 European countries during the summer of 2026, according to two studies published in the journal Nature Health. The research attributed two-thirds of the fatalities directly to climate change, concluding this summer was the continent's deadliest on record. In Portugal, researchers registered 474 heat-related deaths across 14 monitored cities between June and August.

Saharan Dust Cloud Prompts Air Quality Health Warning

🩺 Health 🌱 Environment#air-quality+3 more

The Directorate-General of Health (Direção-Geral da Saúde or DGS) warned of poor air quality across mainland Portugal on Friday and Saturday due to an incoming warm air mass carrying dust from North Africa. Health authorities advised vulnerable populations, including children and people with respiratory conditions, to limit outdoor physical exertion. Inhaled particulate matter is expected to affect visibility and increase pollution levels nationwide throughout the weekend.

The DGS (Direção-Geral da Saúde) is Portugal's central public health authority, responsible for setting health policy guidelines, managing vaccination programs, disease surveillance, and public health campaigns. It operates under the Ministry of Health.

The DGS issues clinical guidelines (normas) that health professionals across Portugal follow, manages the national vaccination schedule, coordinates responses to disease outbreaks, and publishes health statistics. It became widely known during the COVID-19 pandemic as the lead agency for public health guidance.

For residents, the DGS is the authoritative source for vaccination schedules, health alerts, and clinical guidance. Its recommendations shape how hospitals and health centers deliver care across the country.

Europe records over 30,000 heat-related excess deaths

Portugal records 680 excess deaths during summer heatwaves

🩺 Health 🌱 Environment#public-health+3 more

The Ricardo Jorge National Institute of Health (Instituto Nacional de Saúde Doutor Ricardo Jorge or INSA) reported 680 excess deaths in Portugal during three periods this summer. The highest mortality spike occurred between July 2 and July 8, coinciding with an extreme heatwave that health authorities say aggravated pre-existing conditions, particularly among those aged 75 and older. Separately, data shows that road mortality has remained stagnant over the last decade, with 589 road deaths recorded in 2025.

Excess mortality is the number of deaths above what would be expected based on historical averages (commonly a multi‑year baseline), and it captures deaths directly and indirectly caused by events like epidemics, heatwaves or healthcare disruptions. Portugal’s public health institute INSA (Instituto Nacional de Saúde Doutor Ricardo Jorge) monitors excess mortality to see the broader impact of seasonal illnesses and other stresses on the health system, so a drop in flu cases does not automatically mean overall mortality has returned to normal. Those following public‑health trends should note excess‑mortality figures because they show the pandemic and other factors’ continuing effect on population health.

Azores to test cattle for Lajes base pollution

📍 Praia da Vitória 🌱 Environment 🏛️ Government#azores+3 more

The Azores Regional Government is launching an independent scientific investigation into long-term pollution linked to the Lajes Air Base on Terceira Island. Authorities plan to urgently test local cattle for heavy metal contamination and have commissioned a technical committee to assess health risks to the population.

Lajes Air Base (Base Aérea das Lajes) is a Portuguese military airfield on Terceira Island in the Azores that has served as a strategic mid‑Atlantic stop for military and civilian flights since World War II. Its use for US military refuelling matters because operations there involve Portuguese sovereignty and government approval, so allowing US planes to refuel for missions to the Middle East can create legal and political controversy in Lisbon and the Azores.

Heatwave linked to nearly 200 excess deaths in Portugal

🩺 Health 🌱 Environment#healthcare+3 more

Recent heatwave conditions have resulted in nearly 200 excess deaths across Portugal over the last five days, with 62 deaths recorded on Monday alone. While the World Health Organization (WHO) warns that European nations must treat the heat as a public health emergency, the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) currently rules out an extreme scenario for the country.

Update: Heatwave linked to 63 excess deaths

The Secretary of State for Health confirmed that 63 excess deaths have been directly associated with the recent heatwave as of July 6. Authorities noted that while demand for the SNS 24 health line and emergency services has increased, the overall pressure on hospital emergency departments remains manageable.

A red warning is the highest alert level issued by Portugal's weather agency, the Portuguese Institute for the Sea and the Atmosphere (Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera or IPMA), used when conditions pose a very high risk to life and property. Under a red warning authorities may close roads, suspend transport and advise people to avoid coastal and flood‑prone areas, so follow civil protection instructions during the Friday–Saturday storm period.

If you need emergency care and a local ED is understaffed, call 112 for life‑threatening situations or contact the national health triage line (SNS 24) for urgent guidance; the operator can direct you to the nearest hospital with capacity or arrange an ambulance. As an expat, also consider local private hospitals or clinics if available and keep your health insurance details and ID ready to speed up admission.
