Minister of Environment and Energy Maria da Graça Carvalho has ruled out nuclear energy for Portugal, asserting that the nation's high potential for solar, wind, and hydroelectric power makes renewables the only logical path for energy independence and competitiveness.
Greenvolt Next, a Greenvolt Group subsidiary focused on decentralised renewable energy for businesses, has partnered with Carrefour Property to install solar carports at Carrefour hypermarkets across France. The project involves 45,000 solar panels with a combined capacity of approximately 25 MWp, spanning 120 locations. Operating under a 20-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA), Greenvolt Next will handle the financing, construction, and long-term maintenance. This initiative aims to reduce energy costs and decarbonise Carrefour's real estate portfolio. Separately, Greenvolt has sold two battery projects in Poland for €391.5 million.

Galp aims to take its renewable energy business beyond the Iberian Peninsula and is seeking a strategic partner to do so. Georgios Papadimitriou, COO of Galp's renewables division, explained to elEconomista that the company intends to apply the same logic used in its profitable oil and gas operations—participating in large-scale projects—to the renewables sector. The goal is to gain specialized knowledge, technological diversification, and investment capacity. While the preference is for an industrial partner, a financial investor has not been ruled out. This comes as Galp is currently in the process of merging its refining and fuel distribution business with the Spanish company Moeve, with the deal expected to be completed by mid-2026.

For years, the transition to a low-carbon economy was presented primarily as a response to climate change, but successive energy crises are shifting this narrative. Decarbonisation now also means reducing external sovereignty vulnerabilities, ensuring competitive energy, and controlling strategic technologies. The transition must solve three equations: carbon, energy security, and competitiveness. While Portugal has a significant advantage in renewable energy capacity, the challenge lies in transforming this into an industrial edge by attracting energy-intensive industries, as Europe risks replacing its dependence on fossil fuels with a new dependence on Chinese-dominated green technologies.
Renewable energy sources involve indirect costs that go beyond profit and loss analysis, such as costs related to land use, biodiversity, and raw material extraction.
It is, as many have already acknowledged, the business deal of the century. And it is in light of this realization that one must seek the true explanation for all this eagerness to combat climate change. Opinion by Maria Ramalho
