New data from Portugal's Survey on Living Conditions and Income show one region has the country's highest incidence of monetary poverty, with 17.9% of residents living below the poverty threshold. Analysts and local actors attribute the rise to a combination of state neglect, insufficient social-protection measures, the growth of precarious immigration and unstable work, and wider cost-of-living pressures — factors that together depress incomes and worsen social indicators. The figures point to a need for targeted regional policies on social security, employment quality and integration to reverse the trend.

Budget watchdog UTAO (full title: Technical Budget Support Unit) is querying the government’s forecasts for employment growth and prices in 2027, highlighting discrepancies with recent data. In its analysis of The post Budget watchdog queries government’s 2027 forecasts for employment, prices appeared first on Portugal Resident.
The Technical Budget Support Unit (UTAO) has questioned the Government's projections for 2027 employment growth and price developments. In its analysis of the 2027 State Budget proposal, the UTAO states that the forecast of 1.4% job growth is difficult to reconcile with the recent slowdown in net immigration. The unit also warns that the Government's inflation forecast appears inconsistent with its technical assumptions regarding oil prices, and notes risks associated with the energy shock. While the economic growth estimates for 2026 are considered compatible with recent data, the UTAO highlights that the 2027 outlook relies on sustained increases in labour market participation and continued positive migration balances.
The Technical Budget Support Unit (UTAO) questions the employment growth forecast included in the 2027 State Budget proposal. According to parliamentary experts, a growth of 1.4% is inconsistent with a slowdown in immigration. “The 1.4% employment growth in 2027 is difficult to reconcile with the slowdown...”
The 2027 State Budget, presented on Thursday, dominates Friday's front pages, with Público stating it lacks new measures to tackle the rising cost of living. Jornal de Notícias highlights that each Portuguese citizen will pay 7,350 euros in taxes next year, while Correio da Manhã reports the State collects 8 million per hour in taxes. Diário de Notícias reports that Miranda Sarmento calls on the PS not to 'distort' the budget with a surplus. Negócios describes it as a 'budget to the skin to keep public accounts secure', and Eco notes the 2027 Budget relies on ambitious investment and tight fiscal margins. In other news, Expresso reports that courts are ordering the admission of minors to hospitals due to a lack of social responses. The weekly also reports that 52% of immigrants work below their qualification levels: 'There are nurses waiting tables and engineers making deliveries,' it writes. An analysis of the central paradox of our time: while economic factors like inflation and unemployment remain crucial to electoral behaviour, political discourse is increasingly driven by identity, cultural anxiety, and a backlash against globalisation. The author argues that populism has emerged as an emotional response to economic instability, leading to policies that often contradict long-term economic logic in favour of narratives that offer voters a sense of belonging and control.
When we talk about immigration, the first economic intuition would be to think that the labour demand curve has a negative slope, so an increase in supply would increase employment but decrease wages. This interpretation is flawed due to oversimplification, because reality is more complex. Immigrants also consume and create wealth, so demand...
Economists and geographers interviewed by PÚBLICO point out that the increase in immigration can improve the economy and public services, but it must be accompanied by “investment” and “wealth creation”.
A report prepared by ISCTE points to the PSD/CDS Government's “obsession with immigration”, failures in fighting poverty, and predicts that the reduction in corporate income tax (IRC) will result in a “diminutive impact on growth”.
Portugal appeared poorer in June without producing a single euro less, as an update to resident population figures by the National Statistics Institute (INE) caused GDP per capita to drop from 81% to 76.2% of the European average. This article argues that such statistics reflect methodological choices rather than actual wealth, noting that current calculations ignore the long-term economic contribution of immigrants while focusing on a static snapshot. With population growth slowing and the country facing demographic challenges, the author contends that immigration is essential for potential growth, provided the focus shifts from mere registration to the development of human capital and productivity.

The earthquakes that violently shook Venezuela are highlighted in this Friday's press, with Público stating that the quakes are pushing the country into a tragedy of uncertain proportions; Correio da Manhã highlighting the Portuguese victims of the tragedy; and Jornal de Notícias describing a 'descent into hell'. The latter also highlights that SNS24 helpline operators lose part of their salary when they go to the bathroom. The complaint is made, JN explains, anonymously by several professionals from the platform, which is considered one of the main gateways to the National Health Service (SNS). 'They accuse the company of perpetuating a service provision model based on precariousness, lack of autonomy, and growing burnout,' it reads. Expresso reports that an investigation by the University of Coimbra has detected heavy metals in humans who lived near areas polluted by the Lajes military base, reinforcing suspicions of contamination and a link to a cancer outbreak. The IMF's warning about the impact of immigration barriers on the economy is highlighted in Diário de Notícias, which, in its economy supplement, Dinheiro Vivo, features an interview with the lawyer for BES victims, who says that more than 150 of his clients have died waiting for justice.
I admit that the most likely scenario is a decrease in GDP per capita, although far from catastrophic scenarios. This does not mean that immigration makes us poorer! Opinion by Susana Peralta
It is time to pay more attention to what weighs most in our lives.
Passos's coherence, much like his aura, is only sustained from outside of power. If he were in Montenegro's position, he would either have to abandon reformist liberalism or abandon power.
Portugal has the fourth-lowest percentage of children in the EU, with only 9.8% of the population aged 10 or under, compared to 22% in 1975. A study by the University of Coimbra highlights that high housing costs, the cost of living, and a lack of public childcare are driving this decline in birth rates. While immigration currently helps mitigate demographic aging, the country faces long-term socioeconomic instability due to a shrinking workforce and the rising costs of supporting an aging population. The author argues that businesses must play a central role in promoting birth rates by improving work-life balance and that such efforts should be integrated into public policy.
