Europe: Expat rights news in Portugal

The European Commission has launched infringement procedures against Portugal for failing to meet European Union standards in several areas. The actions concern non-compliance with waste recycling targets, inadequate fisheries control, and labour legislation that does not fully align with EU requirements for transparent working conditions.

The European Pact on Migration and Asylum officially entered into force this week, aiming to harmonize entry rules and manage migration flows across the European Union. Minister of the Presidency António Leitão Amaro described the pact as a necessary measure to curb illegal immigration while simultaneously promoting safe, regular migration channels that respect fundamental rights.

The European Union is introducing mandatory salary transparency rules starting June 7, requiring companies to provide clearer information on remuneration policies. Member states must incorporate these directives into domestic law to help reduce wage inequalities, though the rules have yet to be transposed into Portuguese legislation.

The European Parliament and member states have reached a provisional agreement to reform unemployment benefit rules for cross-border workers. Under the new policy, the country where an individual works and contributes will be responsible for paying unemployment benefits. This change aims to resolve existing asymmetries that previously benefited certain member states over others.
