The Madeira archipelago is under a yellow warning today because of strong winds, the Portuguese Institute for the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) has warned.
The islands of São Miguel and Santa Maria, in the eastern Azores group, will be under a yellow warning for wind from 14:00 on Sunday until 08:00 on Monday.
Abrupt drops in pressure turned the storm into an “extremely efficient atmospheric engine”, with winds reaching 160 km/h at several stations. Storm Kristin was the third named by the IPMA since last Friday and the fifth since the start of the year.
The depression Kristin combined two extreme weather phenomena: a “bomb cyclone” and a sting jet, which increased the intensity of the winds. The maximum speed detected by the IPMA was recorded at Cabo Carvoeiro, at around 04:00 — 149 km/h.
The victim was the driver of a light goods vehicle travelling on National Road 1 who died after a tree fell. The Portuguese Institute for the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) also forecasts coastal winds of up to 160 km/h.
Access will be closed at the barrier in Azóia, on the route from Urca to the Convent of the Capuchos and to Peninha, and at the junctions of Azóia, Portela and Capuchos.
IPMA issued orange wind warnings for all districts of mainland Portugal except Bragança. More than 700 incidents had been recorded by 20:00, and a family was rehoused in Oeiras.

By 20:00 more than 700 incidents had been reported and at least one family was rehoused in Oeiras, prompting heightened public-safety advisories for coastal and exposed communities.
Winds are also expected from the west to west-southwest, with average speeds of 55–85 km/h and gusts of up to 110 km/h.
The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) warns that the low-pressure system 'Francis' will begin affecting the Portuguese mainland from Thursday. Stronger winds are expected from Thursday afternoon, with light rain forecast for New Year’s Day mainly on the west coast spreading inland; no rain is expected on New Year’s Eve.
