New taxi fare rules come into force today, but taximeters have until January to adapt

The regulation defining the new pricing rules for taxi services in Portugal comes into effect today, though taximeters may be updated until mid-January 2027. Originally published in June and subsequently suspended for 60 days following industry feedback, a revised regulation (No. 1324-A/2026) was issued on October 13. While the Portuguese Taxi Federation notes that some operational proposals were accepted by the Mobility and Transport Authority (AMT), concerns remain regarding economic factors. The new framework aims to simplify pricing by using a reference fare based on standard calculation modes, intending to make costs more transparent for users. Local authorities retain the power to set specific municipal or metropolitan tariffs, and the AMT plans to launch a digital platform to monitor sector data. Separately, fixed airport taxi fares in Lisbon also begin today, despite some measures remaining pending.
