The Guimarães Court sentenced a man to five years and 10 months in prison for attempting to kill a GNR military officer in Cabeceiras de Basto, Braga district, the Porto District Attorney's Office (PGDP) indicated today.
The weapon was hidden in a bag and modified to be portable. The officer only escaped because he raised the alarm and the three guards on site managed to deflect the shotgun and restrain the attacker.
The PS secretary-general has accused the Government of attempting to 'liberalise evictions' outside of parliamentary oversight, labelling the measures in the new urban rental regime as 'inhumane'. Carneiro warned that the government is bypassing the Assembly of the Republic to facilitate easier tenant evictions, particularly affecting vulnerable elderly citizens in urban centres. He argued that increasing housing supply must precede any changes to rental laws and called on the government led by Luís Montenegro to abandon these legislative plans, which have sparked public concern and vigils outside parliament.
Rival groups of immigrants were involved in street clashes. Three men were stabbed, two of whom are in serious condition.
Victims were assisted at the scene by several teams from the Cabeceiras de Basto fire department, as well as by INEM personnel.
The accident occurred in Painzela, Cabeceiras de Basto, at 01:13. The 19-year-old victim was transported to Braga Hospital.
The suspect was identified by the GNR, but was not arrested.
The fire is under control and there are no reported injuries.
The immigrant family has already been assigned a new home by the local council.
Forest fires occurred in Celorico and Cabeceiras de Basto, resulting from the burning of agricultural waste. The GNR warns that strict safety requirements must be met.
