BPI currently holds 30% of the public guarantees issued under a government program that allows young people up to age 35 to secure 100% financing for their first home. The government authorized 18 credit institutions to participate in this protocol, which officially began in December 2024.
The Portuguese Tax Authority has clarified that young people under 35 are ineligible for first-home tax exemptions if they already own shares in residential properties, regardless of whether those shares were acquired through inheritance or donation.
The European Parliament also advocates for “measures that allow young people to access housing credit,” such as reduced transaction fees, IMT exemption for the purchase of a first home, or the granting of subsidised loans.
