The President of the Republic promulgated this Tuesday (July 7) the decree from the Assembly of the Republic (AR) that amends the Legal Regime of Higher Education Institutions (RJIES), according to a note published on the official website of the Presidency of the Republic. On May 8, the AR approved the new RJIES, a document replacing the law in force since 2007, with favourable votes from PSD, CDS-PP, Chega, and Iniciativa Liberal deputies, votes against from PS, Livre, BE, and PCP, and abstentions from the sole deputies of PAN and JPP. The new model allows for the merger of universities and polytechnics and even the integration of private institutions into public ones, with universities also being able to offer Higher Technical Professional Courses. The new law maintains the differentiation between university and polytechnic subsystems but provides that polytechnic institutes may be converted into polytechnic universities, with the diploma approving the transformation of the Polytechnic Institute of Porto into the Technical University of Porto also being promulgated today by Seguro. The new law also defines that the title of 'Rector' will be the sole designation for those leading both university and polytechnic institutions.
