Alzheimer's and Parkinson's: IPDN President calls for public funding of experimental treatments

The president of the Portuguese Institute for Neurodegenerative Diseases (IPDN), Isabelle de Oliveira, argues that it is urgent to start subsidising innovative treatments to slow the progression of diseases like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. While experimental treatments are becoming available, they remain inaccessible to most due to a lack of public funding. The appeal was made during the IPDN's first international scientific congress in Cascais, which highlighted the growing public health challenge of dementia in the EU, projected to reach 14 million cases as the population ages. Experts also called for better support for informal caregivers, who often face burnout while providing essential, unpaid care, and stressed that increased financial investment is the critical missing link in managing these conditions.
