Government to Overhaul Armed Forces Recruitment Standards
Minister of National Defence (Ministro da Defesa Nacional) Nuno Melo announced that the government will replace the entry criteria for the Portuguese Armed Forces (Forças Armadas). The administration plans to overturn changes made under the previous Socialist government that had lowered height requirements and softened health exclusions. Nuno Melo stated the updated rules will better align recruit standards with the operational demands of military missions.
Nuno Melo is the leader of CDS-PP (Centro Democrático e Social – Partido Popular), a Christian democratic party on Portugal’s centre-right, and Minister of National Defence in Luís Montenegro’s government, where CDS-PP governs in coalition with the PSD. He was previously a Member of the European Parliament.
