Over 30% of healthcare professionals identify psychological violence as frequent and widespread

More than 30% of healthcare professionals in Portugal who participated in a study led by the University of Coimbra (UC) identified psychological violence as frequent and widespread in the workplace, the institution revealed on Wednesday, October 7. The study was developed under the BRAVE-WOW research project, which aims to build respectful, free, and gender-inclusive work environments. The data comes from an initial survey conducted in Portugal with 1,678 participants. Results indicate that 32.8% of healthcare professionals identify psychological violence as frequent or widespread, while 30.1% point to the systematic devaluation of their work. Other findings include bullying (24%), verbal violence (23.2%), sexual harassment (2.1%), and physical violence (1.7%). Project coordinator Leonor Pais noted that the frequency of these reports suggests that response mechanisms focused only on isolated episodes may be insufficient. Furthermore, 45.5% of participants agree that inappropriate conduct is often minimised or excused, and only 16.1% believe their organisations respond effectively to such situations.
