Intelligence services warn of a cyber-espionage scheme by a foreign state targeting WhatsApp and Signal accounts
The Portuguese Security Intelligence Service (SIS) has issued a warning regarding an international cyber-espionage operation sponsored by a foreign state. The campaign targets government officials, diplomats, military personnel, and individuals with access to sensitive information. The attacks do not exploit vulnerabilities in WhatsApp or Signal themselves, but rather use social engineering, phishing, quishing, and AI-generated content to trick users into compromising their own accounts. The intelligence services have provided six security recommendations, including verifying new contacts through alternative channels and never sharing account verification codes.
