Nationality Law to be resumed: understand the next steps
The discussion on the Nationality Law will resume in Parliament in April. The discussion of the veto by then-President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa is scheduled for the 1st. This is a purely bureaucratic procedure without decision-making weight, but it allows the debate to resume once the Government presents the revised text. As DN Brasil anticipated, the Executive would wait to send the new proposal until after the presidential elections. It will be António José Seguro, inaugurated as president this week, who will analyze the law once it is approved. As already occurred with the Foreigners Law, the Government's party has enough votes for approval, thanks to the support of Chega, led by André Ventura. Since this is a revision of the law that was reviewed by the Constitutional Court (TC), the process will be faster, as it will not be necessary to discuss the entire text article by article; only the three norms that the judges considered unconstitutional will be voted on again.
