The choice of Terceira honours half a century of the constitutional consecration of the autonomous regions. Luxembourg represents the Portuguese diaspora in the world.

President of the Republic António José Seguro has selected Terceira Island in the Azores to host the official 2026 Portugal Day celebrations, marking the 50th anniversary of regional autonomy. The celebrations will also extend to Luxembourg to honour the Portuguese diaspora. President Seguro confirmed he will continue the practice of holding dual celebrations in both Portugal and abroad, as established by his predecessor.

Last year, the celebrations took place in the Algarve, in Lagos, and in Stuttgart and Munich, Germany.
