Six European countries lost their measles-free status this week. “It is the most contagious microorganism we know,” warns the researcher at the University of Cambridge (United Kingdom).
Data from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control show declines in 15 of the 29 countries for which data are available. There were ten times more measles cases in 2024 than in 2023.
The status, awarded by the World Health Organization, means the country has not had the same measles strain circulating in the past 12 months. 2024 data remove the designation from six European countries.
