Housing protesters in Porto approved a formal request to meet the President of the Republic at Belém Palace to demand the resignation of Minister of Internal Administration (Ministro da Administração Interna) Luís Neves. The resolution, passed by a popular assembly at Praça D. João I, calls on the head of state to condemn police violence during the clearance of tent encampments and to review housing proposals submitted by activists.
The protest vote follows accusations from the Police Professionals' Trade Union Association (Associação Sindical dos Profissionais da Polícia or ASPP/PSP) that the government instrumentalised law enforcement during encampment evictions. ASPP, the largest union within the Public Security Police (Polícia de Segurança Pública or PSP), said direct orders from internal administration officials and Prime Minister Luís Montenegro placed officers in extreme confrontations while evicting protesters. The union argued that the government is shifting the political fallout of the housing crisis onto frontline officers.
