Portugal secures historic seat on UN Security Council

Portugal has been elected as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for the 2027-2028 term. This marks the first time the country has secured the seat in the initial round of voting, a result Prime Minister Luís Montenegro described as a victory for Portuguese diplomacy and a commitment to global peace.

The United Nations Security Council (Conselho de Segurança das Nações Unidas) is one of the six principal organs of the UN, tasked with maintaining international peace and security. It consists of 15 members, including five permanent members with veto power and ten non-permanent members elected for two-year terms, such as Portugal for the 2027-2028 period.

The UN's new risk map

🏛️ Government 🇪🇺 Europe#un-security-council+2 more

On 15 September, the UN published its latest Global Risk Report, in which over 1,300 government, business, civil society, and UN officials across 155 countries assessed 28 risks based on probability, severity, time horizon, and institutional preparedness. The report highlights a shift in the 'hierarchy of fear,' where war and geopolitical tensions have returned to the forefront, while climate and public health concerns have lost relative attention. The author argues that political attention is finite, and the danger lies in the tendency to replace one concern with another, confusing a shift in focus with a change in reality. Portugal, recently elected to the UN Security Council for 2027-2028, is urged to use this report as a roadmap for its mandate, focusing on prevention, partnership, and protection while maintaining preparedness for both current and future crises.
