In the space of just two months, Portugal’s centre-right government has authorised the felling of more than 9,000 trees – many of them protected species of cork and holm oaks. The aim is to nearly quadruple the Penamacor 2 Wind Farm’s average annual electricity production. A total of 855 trees will be felled.
A total of 451 cork oaks and 304 holm oaks will be felled, affecting an area of 6.7570 hectares.
Rail and road projects, wind and solar energy and housing are among the investments that led the Government to approve the felling of protected trees, recognising the public interest of the projects. The felling will be compensated by planting other trees.
