Lua Afonso, the girl from Covilhã who was praised in Parliament for being a brilliant student, is now beginning her degree in Aerospace Engineering. She was admitted with an average grade of 19.7.


18-year-old Lua Afonso was honoured in the United States with the Anita Gale Visionary Leadership Award, one of the most prestigious prizes awarded at the international final of the International Space Settlement Design Competition (ISSDC). The young woman from Covilhã stood out among nearly 24,000 participants from around the world.

Lua Afonso was praised in Parliament for being a “brilliant student” (with a perfect grade point average), a pianist, and a high-performance athlete. At 18, she is already used to winning awards! Her next challenge: representing Europe in a NASA competition.

The regional government has officially commended a school from Madalena for winning the CanSat Portugal competition.

There is a young prodigy in Covilhã who is in the running to reach NASA, after winning the European stage of the largest international space design competition for young people. A secondary school student, she has already received several distinctions and promises to continue making headlines.
