Still waiting for your first residence permit? Find out what AIMA says about delivery deadlines

First-time residence permit applications are a frequent source of questions for DN Brasil readers. Following many updates from the Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum (AIMA) regarding renewal processes, those still awaiting a response to their initial application have been complaining about delays. According to AIMA sources, most of these requests come from people who applied for residency through family reunification or job-seeker visas. Although the latter was suspended in October last year when several changes to the foreign nationals law were approved, this visa category still saw around 70,000 issuances in 2025 alone. For those who applied for their first residence permit via family reunification, the process can take up to nine months, as stipulated in the updated law. AIMA sources state that, for the time being, these cards will take this long to be issued. Regarding other categories, such as job-seeker visas, the agency claims there are no significant delays and that correctly submitting the application with all required documents is the key to faster processing. The newspaper also confirmed there are no issues with the Mint regarding document production delays.
